Chelsea Goes Full Flowerverse: Your Insider’s Guide to Chelsea in Bloom (Out of This World)

If you’ve ever looked at Chelsea and thought, Gorgeous, yes. But what if it had… a suspended UFO made of flowers?, congratulations. This year’s Chelsea in Bloom is speaking directly to your inner space cadet. From 18–24 May, the neighbourhood lifts off, transforming into an open-air gallery of Out of This World installations as London’s largest complimentary floral festival takes over the neighbourhood.

Stretching from Knightsbridge to the King’s Road, Sloane Square to the River Thames, the theme draws freely on cosmic myth, astrology and celestial symbolism, all filtered through a distinctly Chelsea lens. Think planets and Pegasus, star signs and spectacle. Think haute horticulture with its head firmly in the clouds.

More than 150 retailers, hotels and Chelsea institutions will compete for the coveted title of Best Floral Display, turning the area into a flower-drenched constellation. From Boodles and Brunello Cucinelli at the top of Sloane Street, past Royal Court Theatre and Ralph Lauren on Sloane Square, along the King’s Road and down towards the Chelsea Heritage Quarter by the Thames, acres of London will be doused in floral imagination. Not to overstate it, but this is London’s, and quite possibly the world’s, largest free-to-attend festival of floral art.

Step carefully. You’re entering the Flowerverse.

Across the neighbourhood, moments of theatrical scale await. A Floral Zodiac anchors Sloane Square. Duke of York Square takes inspiration from the Artemis moon landing. Pavilion Road hosts a hovering UFO. On Sloane Street, the drama peaks with a four-metre floral Pegasus and a similarly sized flower-breathing dragon, both unapologetically engineered for modern myth-making and exceptional camera rolls. Instagram moments are not simply encouraged; they are inevitable.

It is Chelsea, after all, just with added stardust. And a notably higher chance of overhearing someone ask, quite sincerely, “Is that… Saturn?”

Behind the spectacle sits a carefully choreographed week for those who like to know how the magic unfolds. Sunday 17 May marks set‑up, the calm before the bloom. On Monday 18 May, official photography begins alongside media and influencer tours, and People’s Champion online voting opens, inviting the public into the process.

Tuesday 19 May brings Judging Day, followed by an evening awards ceremony where the Judges’ winners are revealed. People’s Champion voting closes at midnight on Thursday 21 May, with the public’s winner announced on Friday 22 May. The festival continues through to Sunday 24 May, the final act for your camera roll and your collective sense of delight.

This may be floral fantasy, but it is subject to serious scrutiny and rigour. Displays are evaluated by a panel including RHS‑affiliated judges and lifestyle judges, with visitors also invited to cast their vote for the People’s Choice award. Your opinion counts.

A final, considered note. In line with RHS Chelsea guidelines, floral foam is not used, with sustainable alternatives embraced throughout. The result is spectacle with integrity, where creativity and care go hand in hand. This year’s charity partner, Confetti Club, carries that ethos forward by repurposing the festival’s fading blooms into beautiful, biodegradable wedding confetti, ensuring the flowers’ story continues long after the final petals fall.

Chelsea in Bloom stretches across Sloane Street, Lower Sloane Street, Sloane Square, Duke of York Square, Pavilion Road and the King’s Road, forming an unmissable trail of colour, creativity and controlled extravagance. In other words, you can’t really miss it unless you leave London entirely.

Free to explore, joyfully competitive and designed for wandering, Chelsea in Bloom is an invitation to see the neighbourhood fresh, just a little more magical, and distinctly out of this world. Come for the flowers. Stay for the atmosphere. Leave with the feeling that for one luminous week in May, Chelsea didn’t just bloom - it transcended.
