Join Professor Lucy Noakes on 2 March as she discusses the key role women played in Britain in both wars in the early 20th Century.

From the formation of the Women’s’ Army Auxiliary Corps in 1917 to the creation of the Auxiliary Territorial Service in 1938, women worked alongside men in the British Army; freeing many men for the front line. Although there was wide recognition of necessity for women’s military employment, there also happened to be widespread resistance shaped by patriarchal concerns.

Lucy Noakes will trace women’s work alongside the British Army and highlight their constraints driven by the wider areas of gender roles in wartime in this fantastic free talk.
